Modern Monstrosities: How Weightlifting and Agriculture have disconnected from nature

Written by:

Our practice of agriculture and weightlifting have been heavily influenced by the profit-driven pressures of capitalism. This has led to some behaviors that prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability and health.

In the world of bodybuilding and strength training, the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) like trenbolone, clenbuterol, and anavar has become extremely common. Every influencer, actor, or athlete is on something. While these substances can dramatically increase muscle growth and fat loss in the short term, they come with significant damage to health and are ultimately not sustainable. They prioritize looks over health. Natural, drug-free training may yield slower results but is far better for long-term wellbeing.

Similarly, modern industrial agriculture has become increasingly reliant on heavy pesticide use, over-spraying, and a rabid focus on maximizing yields above all else. This approach destroys soil health extremely fast and is a horrible way to farm. Farming with regenerative organic farming practices that prioritize soil health is critical for the long-term viability of our food systems and more importantly, us.

In both weightlifting and farming, there is much we can learn from the more natural approaches of the past. Training with calisthenics and growing food with practices like cover cropping and crop rotation served humanity well for millennia.

However, completely abandoning all modern innovations would be an overcorrection. The key is to examine practices in both fields and seek a middle path – one that combines the best of indigenous wisdom with the most sustainable and health-promoting modern methods. This could look like organic farming that uses modern technology like remote sensing and AI, and workout routines that focus on natural movements combined with modern scientific insights on biomechanics and nutrition.

Ultimately, the profit-driven shortsightedness and ecologically damaging practices that capitalism incentivizes are to blame. Seizing the means of production doesn’t just have to occur at work. Take ownership of your health and teach yourself how to train at home. Teach yourself how to grow food at home. Don’t be reliant on a system that seeks to poison you.
